For example, a chrome-plated metal or oxidized painted aluminum surface with any combination of "laminate-tile" or "laminate-parquet" will look very organic and spectacular. In this case, the abrasion resistance of such a paddle will be several times higher than a dyed polyvinylchloride film or laminated HDF, from which a laminate is made.

The entire range of options on offer for docking flooring with a laminate board in terms of design and purpose can be divided into several categories:

  • Compensation thresholds for laminate.
Important! The second most important task, except decoration and leveling functions, is the compensation of microscopic movements of the laminate in conditions of varying temperature and humidity.

How does the laminate flooring work?

Such conditions do not always arise, for example, for two slabs of laminate with different patterns or dissimilar coatings laid in the same room, you will only need a decorative strip covering the seams.

Simple docking sills are designed to ensure the continuity of the floor covering. The main task is to provide the most smooth, while hidden transition between the surfaces of the laminate. It is produced in the form of a HDF strip, laid in the seam between the coatings.

Often, in one design, the manufacturer creates several functions. For example, dock pads often perform compensatory functions. Such systems allow you to connect a coating with a different coefficient of expansion, for example, laminate and tile. They are always made in the form of two parts - a fastening part installed in the seam, and a decorative patch covering the joint. The difference between this and the docking variant is the availability of a free space that allows free expansion of the laminate plates when the humidity or load changes.

Previously, the problem of compensation was tried to solve by laying between the joints of an additional tape of lining material, for example, cork or foamed polystyrene, but subsequently refused such a scheme because of strong contamination of the seam.

One of the most difficult tasks of joining laminate boards with other types of floor coverings has to be solved in the case when the surfaces to be joined are at different levels. For example, it is necessary to close the end of the slab of laminate, which "runs into" linoleum.

For these purposes, it is possible to use paddles with a special angular profile, or a conventional compensation option installed at the angle of the cover slope.

In the same way, it is possible to design thresholds for laminate in the areas of abutment under the doorways in the apartment, before going to the kitchen, veranda, the entrance to the storage room, the utility room.

"Curves" docking lines are often used for kitchens or hallways, where the flooring is often made of two parts, in the form of ceramic tiles and laminate, or commercial linoleum.

Methods of installation of thresholds

The reasons for which the owners prefer to make a joint between the laminate and the tile on a complex curved path may be several, but most often this choice is dictated by the convenience of placing kitchen furniture or the rational use of a small space in the hall.

In this case, a flexible version of the paddle is used, which consists of two parts - an aluminum base and a polyvinyl chloride decorative trim. The base or fasteners are made in the form of a split tape. Preliminary, at the junction between the laminate and the tile, you need to cut the groove for the width of the fasteners. The aluminum profile is bent exactly along the contour, cut off and fastened in the groove with the help of glue, but with mandatory reinforcement with self-tapping screws, 5 pieces per meter of length.

To install a polymer strip, it must be heated in hot water with a temperature of 60-70aboutC for 15 min. The softened strip is gently curved along the curved contour and, after cooling, snaps into the fixture.

Most of the thresholds for the laminate are fixed on the joint line with the help of external or closed fasteners. In the first case, there are already holes on the surface of the aluminum strip for self-tapping screws. A set of plugs and screws is always sold complete with a decorative strip.

Since the overhead bars in most cases fit under the doorways, the most difficult is to properly trim the ends of the paddle that repeat the contour of the latch and the casing at the base of the door. If the tie was successful, you only need to drill the holes, plug the plugs and wrap the screws.

For flaps with closed fasteners, the installation of the bar is not much more difficult, but there are special features. In such a bar there are no points for drilling, they are chosen independently. Further, as in the above diagram, it is necessary to hammer into the holes of the plug, and in the "ruler" the paddle is laid with a corresponding number of screws. After aligning the position on the rod, a polyurethane adhesive is applied under the head of each self-tapping screw. The porosises are turned over, the screws are inserted into the holes of the plugs and, through a wooden bar, are hammered to the limit with a hammer. Above the pylons load with oppression until the glue dries completely.

Before installing the paddle, experts advise you to check the play between the screw and the bar. If the fasteners "dangle" by more than 0.1 mm, it is better to replace the self-tapping screw to a larger size, having first put the base of the cap and the point on the grindstone.


Mechanical fastening with self-tapping screws ensures a normal grip of the lath and edges of the laminate. Attempts to glue or fix on mortgage elements, as a rule, do not lead to success. Slips can be attributed to the most stressed parts of the floor covering, so it often has to be changed more often than the laminate itself. This is worth remembering when installing decorative elements on the glue.
